Trixter General Information >-------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction -- Hello all, and welcome to DemoNews 146. _____Introduction Well, this issue is a biggie. Those of you receiving this in email are going to get 2 parts. If you go and look for it on the archive, you'll find just a single text file. _____Changes To The Archive - Click on the big spinning yellow "H" at the top of www.hornet.org. Can we say "never let a bored Snowman with 3 hours to kill have telnet access to the archive"? :) - Fixed up the scene links page a bit. Deleted a lot of crappy links. Hello people? If the only thing your page says is "Great music utilities! Nothing yet, under construction.", don't submit it. - I changed the behavior of the "New Uploads" section on our main page slightly. Now you can select _how_ recently you want to see uploads. - It is proving to be very difficult integrating our telepac.pt mirror logs with our existing hornet.org logs. These logs allow me to do things like "Top Downloads". It was my hope to have the mirror logs combined by now, but alas. _____FreeBSD Demo Scene FreeBSD is a version of Unix that runs on your PC. It is similar to Linux. I prefer it over Linux for many reasons (which I won't get into here). Recently I sent a copy of FreeBSD to MikMak in the hopes that we'd get some music utilities ported to this OS. I was able to get MikMod compiled natively under FreeBSD, but some of the modifications I had to do weren't pretty. If you're willing to take the plunge and try your hand at developing PC demo scene applications under FreeBSD, email me. Remember folks, this the PC Demo Scene, not the PC Windows '95 Scene. There is no law that says you must write demos for DOS or Windows. Don't just say "Windows 95 sucks". Say "Windows 95 sucks because...". Break down those walls. Make fun of your fellow sceners who can't figure out how to upload files in lower-case or disable html-encoded email in Netscape! Learn how easy it is to write a quick little Perl script that busts ICQ's ass in functionality. Encode and playback .mp3's at the same time on a P166. I think I'm getting a bit off topic now... :) _____Assembly Organizers Speak > One thing you might want to mention in the next edition of DemoNews could > be that we are going to have a Java demo competition. But not just any > competition, this will be the very first competition ever in any major > party that anybody can attend. > > So you don't have to be present at the party place (you must submit your > contribution a few days in advance though) and it will take part in the > actual compo. We will release all the details on the asm web site > (www.assembly.org/asm97) as soon as we get the new site ready. I think and > hope that many US dudes who can't come to ASM might want to participate in > the Java demo compo. _____Zipview Problem Fixed A big thank you goes out this week to Andre-John Mas who told me about the "Content-Disposition: inline" tag. I was having a problem the archive's Zipview (online .zip previewer thing). When you clicked on a file inside a .zip, the wrong name would appear for downloading. Andre-John helped me fix this. _____Hornet Archive Graphics Gallery I want to put up some sort of graphics gallery on the archive using the images in /graphics/images. However, many of those images are in .lbm format (which isn't displayed by any modern html browser that I'm aware of). I need to get those .lbm files converted to something more web-friendly. Would some aspiring coder out there be willing to write an lbm2gif command-line utility for me that compiles correctly under FreeBSD? _____Conclusion I'm very sensitive about case. Help us to make this contest another success! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> :: "Virtual.gallery" :: Mercator / Ooze Labs - a9225889@unet.univie.ac.at Description of the VRML Web site http://www.geometrie.tuwien.ac.at/virtual.gallery/ May 11, 1997 _____Concept Virtual.gallery is the first interactive gallery in cyberspace. It is open to artists as well as visitors free of charge. The gallery is designed to feature artwork from virtually any area of computer art including painting, virtual sculpture and architecture, interactive computer art or computer music. We participate in the Prix Ars Electronica. The pages are NOT online yet. This text is a modified excerpt of the text sent to the jury of the Prix Ars. Virtual.gallery is mainly coded in the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML), a standard language for describing interactive 3-D objects and worlds delivered across the Internet. The visitor of the gallery is able to interact with objects in a 3-dimensional way. On the other hand objects can be associated with behaviors and can therefore react to the decisions of the user. The entrance hall of virtual.gallery, for example, features a copy of the so called Jitterbug, an octahedral shape which reveals its blossoming beauty by clicking on the top triangle. _____We need your help! Virtual.gallery considers itself as a service for artists who want to show their work to a broad spectrum of visitors on the Internet by using the latest technology in virtual reality publishing. * Important part begins * This is where you come in! We need your help. I want to present art of the underground, of our scene in the virtual.gallery. I would like to see art from the scene getting more popular there. Please send us some of your pictures! They don't have to be new, they just have to be "art". Virtual.gallery provides basically five categories for submission. Since this is a free service and Web space is limited, the following restrictions for file types and file sizes apply. category file type file size ----------------------- --------------------------- -------------------------- painting jpg, gif, png, lbm,... < 100 kB virtual sculpture VRML 1.0, 2.0 < 10 kB compressed virtual architecture VRML 1.0, 2.0 < 30 kB compressed interactive art VRML 2.0, VrmlScript, Java < 50 kB compressed computer music midi, wav, mod < 50 kB We keep the right to decide which files we will present there. If we present your work there, you will have to fill out a submission form afterwards. This form contains information about the proposed content and the identity of the artist. Send files by e-mail to me a9225889@unet.univie.ac.at or virtual.gallery@geometrie.tuwien.ac.at Artists, who have pictures on the Freedom or Dreams CDROM can also give me their permission to use those, if they don't want to send files. The DEADLINE is May 23rd !!! After that date, you can't be presented to the jury of the Prix Ars Electronica. If our page wins some price and gets well knows (which will be quite hard, but possible), you could get well known too. * Important part ends * After that date, artists have to go the official way, which is: filling out the submission form on our page and sending the file with a mail. The virtual.gallery team will then include the submitted artwork in one of its exhibitions for up to 6 months and establish a link from the object to the artist's homepage or provide contact information and a short biography. The team at virtual.gallery may also decide to set up a special exhibition on one particular artist. In its opening exhibition, which is shown to the jury of the Prix Ars Electronica 1997, virtual.gallery features Martin "Cereal" Fahrnberger, a young Austrian underground PC artist. This is not quite true anymore - you can also get an own room, if you send some good pictures. Our pages will be online at the end of May! _____Technotes / General information about VRML Up to the date of this writing there exists no VRML browser which is 100% compliant with the VRML 2.0 specifications as published in August 1996. However, there exists a large variety of browsers available in beta versions which are capable of viewing virtual.gallery. Most of them can be downloaded free of charge. The following table provides download information. browser URL --------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Silicon Graphics Cosmo Player http://vrml.sgi.com/cosmoplayer/ Sony Cyber Passage http://www.sonypic.com/vs/ Intervista WorldView http://www.intervista.com/ Newfire Torch http://www.newfire.com/pinfo/ IICM Vrwave http://www.iicm.edu/vrwave/ Holger Grahn GLView http://www.snafu.de/~hg/ Dimension X Liquid Reality http://www.dnx.com/products/lr/ A complete listing can be found at the VRML repository at http://www.sdsc.edu/vrml/. It has to be noted that virtual.gallery cannot be viewed correctly with the beta version of Live3D which is included in the beta distribution of Netscape Communicator. This is due to some bugs of Live3D's prototype handling. The virtual.gallery team recommends Intervista WorldView for PCs and Silicon Graphics Cosmo Player for Silicon Graphics Workstations. VRML 2.0 compliant browsers for the Apple Macintosh will be available soon. As mentioned above, VRML 2.0 browsers are still in beta stage. There are, therefore, certain restriction which the visitor of virtual.gallery has to be aware of. Firstly, no VRML browser is completely bug free and may crash under certain circumstances. Secondly, rendering speed is sometimes disappointing, even with state of the art hardware. One of the few browsers that brings sufficient rendering speed is Newfire Torch. But this software is still in alpha stage and therefore rather unstable. Finally, most VRML browsers have serious difficulties in handling light sources and proper shading. In particular, there exists no browser yet which is able to calculate shadows. It is no question, however, that these restrictions will disappear over time and that walking through virtual.gallery will become a truly virtual experience! _____Legal Notes Artists retain all artistic or commercial rights. Virtual.gallery reserves the right to reject material which is offensive or illegal under international or Austrian laws. _____Credits This site is hosted by the Institute of Geometrie at the Vienna University of Technology. _____Summary location http://www.geometrie.tuwien.ac.at/virtual.gallery/ contact a9225889@unet.univie.ac.at concept and design Dr. Michael G. Since all 28 finalist entries from tg97 music compo are available on ftp, I have released this review so people have some idea of which songs they should take a listen to, and which not to bother with. This guide is purely the opinion of one scene fan and should not be taken as law. I have included a brief description of each song, along with good points and bad points, and finally, a letter-grade. Grades are a loose guideline (A is good to excellent, B is okay to good, C is mediocre or worse) and not meant to be definitive like a Hornet star-rating. _____The Finalists For starters, here's the list of finalists: (Note: there was only one music compo, sort of a break from tradition of having a multi and 4ch compo at most parties...) As you see, I don't get any more specific than "techno", "demo", "jazz" or whatever. _____"Blue Bay Bar" by Zauron of Index, Maak, and Tpolm This song is sort of a mellow jazz-piano with a touch of demo music (the leads are synthetic). Rather well tracked and the mixing is nice, decent melodies. One problem, over half of the samples are ripped from necros' Orchard Street. pros: good piano work; overall nice sound. cons: rather repetitive and too many ripped necros samples. overall grade: B+ _____"Carbondioxide" by Vinnie / Spaceballs Vinnie is definitely one of the alltime protracker masters. This song is no exception. It is a very original piece of a style nearly impossible to describe, except to say that it is at times both very funky and very relaxing and atmospheric. The only problem with this piece is that it's not a new piece, but had been released on the mods anthology and possibly elsewhere long before this compo. pros: refreshing style; great bassline and smooth sax leads. cons: not really a new release. overall grade: A _____"Clean Air" by Orbiter / DNA A rather strange techno/ambient piece. Introduction is good, reminds me a bit of 'closer' (Groo). Drum track is a plus. The ambient chord pads are nice samples but they are not used in a very interesting way. Decent use of shouting voices and other such noise. Ending is a simple fadeout. pros: good percussion, nice ambience at times. cons: not too interesting, disappointing ending. overall grade: B- _____"Confront Reality" by Elling / Laban The introduction seemed promising, but what you have here is a pretty standard techno piece. The samples are the best aspect of this tune, as the music itself is really not much to get excited about. I don't really care for those chords, they sound a bit dissonant at times. pros: above average samples and technique. cons: a derivative techno piece with little to offer. overall grade: B- _____"Dream Access" by Silver Another mellow ambient piece. Good drumtracks and nice-sounding chord pads. This song is a bit repetitive, but the progressions are nice and it has a fairly full sound. The first half is very reminiscent of a Basehead piece. pros: nice mixing and percussion work, smooth chords. cons: not terribly interesting. overall grade: B+ _____"Frozen Dreams" by ??? Starts off interestingly with piano/strings and overdriven guitar. Seems like it's going to develop nicely, but it ends up becoming quite a bit of a mess. The guitar solos are the highlight, they would've been better served with more of a song behind them. pros: nice guitar work, good intro. cons: song at times seems random and just not very good. overall grade: C+ _____"Gettin' Groovy" by Dolby / Image Dreams Slightly above average piece of funk. The samples are rather nice and the riffs and bassline are pretty groovin'. I was hoping for some jazzy leads, but ended up a bit disappointed. The song just seemed to go on, and by the time it ended (not very well, at that), I realized that there wasn't really much to it. pros: nice funk guitar, basses. cons: lacks substance, abrupt ending, rather forgettable. overall grade: B- _____"Heard It Before" by Epithal / Limited Edition A drum and bass tune... not badly tracked. Ambient chord pads are okay. The occasional leads brought in are pretty nice. This tune is a bit lacking in overall excitement. pros: percussion, leads aren't bad. cons: somewhat boring. overall grade: B- _____"Highlander" by Radiance / Massive and Instinct Synth/orchestral with a bit of a scottish influence I suppose. It has a decent sound, not much style. Rather boring and undeveloped. Intro was better than the end. pros: decent samples, music isn't bad. cons: terribly unexciting, whole song sounds pretty much the same. overall grade: B- _____"I'm Coming (To The Gathering)" by Melwyn and Anne "I'm coming to the ga-ga-ga-gathering. So why won't you just wote for me?" another one of those propaganda pieces, in the spirit of leinad's hit... only this is a jazz piece, not tekkno-rap. =) Musical value isn't much, but for what it is, it's not badly done. pros: hear this silly guy and gal sing (not _too_ badly). =) cons: music behind the vox is passable at best. overall grade: B- _____"I'm Not Bad" by Phelix / Yodel This isn't bad, actually it's a pretty good techno piece. Suffers from the usual repetition, but this is probably the best of this style from the compo. overall grade: B+ pros: a pretty solid techno track. cons: same as above, but not to such a degree. _____"It's A Dream" by Bullet A decent acid/techno piece. some good riffs and it's tracked fairly well. I like the use of the vocal samples in the middle of the song. Drumloop isn't that great. pros: nice acid samps, not as blah as some of the other techno-ish pieces. cons: still somewhat forgettable. overall grade: B+ _____"Korean Fantasies" by Brainbug and Boo Well, Brainbug's done some sweet tunes and this one's no exception. A smooth mellow guitar piece with some feeling. From the 1994 copyright, I can guess this is a reworking or re-releasing of an old piece. I hadn't heard this one before, so I won't make any assumptions. Still, as with Vinnie's tune, it's a bit irritating. And gee, this doesn't last for long. pros: very sweet guitar piece all around. cons: 1m43 playing time + repeated patterns = not a lot of music here. overall grade: A- _____"Norlyn" by Yolk / Parallax I've always been a fan of yolk's music. This is another piece of deja vu, however, as this song has been released for quite some time now. With that aside, it's a mellow piece with some sweet melodies. pros: so what if it's elevator music...? it's good elevator music. cons: all that's new for tg97 in this song is a few lines of sampletexts. overall grade: A _____"Optimize" by Clone Yet another tekkno piece entered into the music compo at The Gathering. Is anyone really surprised? I'm not. Once again, nothing to make it stand out, more average techno if you can't get enough of this. pros: yet another fairly well-tracked/composed techno piece. cons: yet another fairly well-tracked/composed techno piece. overall grade: B _____"Persian Angel" by Taymaz and Wstd Well, it's not techno. I liked the introduction, but was let down a bit by the actual song. It's a demo-music piece with nice (but way too quiet) leads. The sound isn't very full, though, and the piece is pretty under- developed. These guys are some high-quality sample rippers. PM, LK, Shad, Clawz, etc., hmmm... reminiscent of Necros' old demomusic style, not as good though. pros: good tracking, nice leads; at least it's not another techno piece. cons: doesn't reach the level of excitement i was expecting/hoping for. overall grade: B _____"Physical Attraction" by Psycho / Session Another techno-ish piece. This is a pretty decent one. It's an acid tune with some decent variation and probably some of the better riffs among these unremarkable tunes. pros: pretty good riffs, drumloops, not as boring as others. cons: still not very original. overall grade: B+ _____"Plastic Nudity" by Jisemdu and Carmel / Sotu Still trying to figure out the name, but I'm enjoying the tune. It's a fairly rockin' piece... some nice melodies (lead instrument maybe a bit too synthy though) in this one and the tune has a pretty nice groove. Arpeggio in a guitar tune? Whatever works i guess. =) pros: nice sampled guitar riffs, good leads, overall nice effort. cons: nothing too serious. overall grade: A _____"Rivendell" by Radix and Skize / Limited Edition Not to be confused with the REW's same-named tune from a year or two ago. Well, the title is certainly appropriate, as it has that medieval tolkien-esque sound. All-around great samples and tracking here. I can't say that it's quite as interesting as radix's more typical pieces (which are superb), but it definitely captures that Elven feeling. pros: very original medieval style, great samples, well-tracked. cons: nothing really. overall grade: A _____"Stativ" by Scott / Spaceballs Well, here's a pleasant surprise... I certainly wasn't expecting a new multichannel module from Scott / Spaceballs! Starts out interestingly, with a somewhat classical feel to it. Picks up a groove halfway through, and there's the Scott music we know and love. =) Great tune... pros: smooth, original multichannel from an oldschool spaceballs great! cons: nothing worth mentioning. overall grade: A _____"Stoned" by Balrog, Codec, and Martyn An interesting, strange, but definitely funky piece of music here. If you're familiar with Balrog's style you probably have an idea of what this is like. Good bassline work, and leads are pretty nice. pros: original and groovy, nice bass and percussion. cons: it's a bit too strange for my liking. overall grade: B+ _____"Sunset In Africa" by The Silencer / Sotu Woah! Heh, this is quite a piece. Starts with a bang, some nice piano chords. Quick african-style flute melodies come in, then a drumtrack with some nice bongo work. =) This song really won me over, though, when those awesome african vocals came in -- sounds _great_ with the piano. Very original... this song is quite an experience. pros: great ethnic music with great piano chords, percussion, awesome vox. cons: timing seems off when played in ft2, but in cubic it sounds fine. overall grade: A _____"The Experience" by Trashcan Welp, after that run of five great original entries, I guess this was overdue. We're back to another acid/techno piece. This one sounds pretty good, actually. Repeats just as much as the rest though, and the ending is weak. pros: some nice samples, tracked pretty well. cons: repetitive, and that chiplead has to go. overall grade: B _____"The Horse Race" by Kezoomer / Lost Souls I'm sorry, but this I can't enjoy this at all. Very cheesy and boring chord progression with a silly style and ridiculous melodies. This is a rather garbage tune. Horse race sfx only add to the stupidity. pros: it's short. cons: everything else. overall grade: C- _____"Virtual Reality" by Basic Energy and Yuxon One of the more mediocre techno pieces. I can't say much good about this compared to the others. The samples aren't that great. Incredibly cheesy and uninspired use of sfx ("on some level we understand that what we see is for real" got old after about the second of fifty-some times it's used). pros: doesn't totally suck. cons: mediocre everything, stupid vox overall grade: C+ _____"World of Tolkien" by Toal Nkor and Wain An orchestral piece. Lots of nice sounds, but they're mostly ripped from noted symphonic-trackers like Skaven, Jase, Markell Moss, etc. Best part of this is definitely the slow-part, because the rest is a confusing mess. The fast part has a bit too much Kingdom Skies influence, seems almost as if some of the tracking techniques were lifted straight from it. pros: nice sounds, slow part w/ harp and strings is very sweet. cons: the rest of the song is spastic, borrows too much from jase's tune. overall grade: B- _____"Westcoastdaria" by Poison / Goto10 Interesting piece, a pretty intense rock tune. The main problem with this piece, is that the sampled guitar riffs are very noisy. Lowers the quality of the song overall. pros: pretty original piece, this guy plays some decent guitar. cons: very noisy samples and repetitive music. overall grade: B _____"Wit Down" by Jason / Melon, Crusaders, and Noiseless Ever since I heard the Ninja2 soundtrack i'd been hoping that Jason would continue to release multichannel works. Although this tune isn't quite as good as that near-masterpiece, it's quite enjoyable. Excellent ambience with a smooth chord progression and leads. pros: wonderfully tracked and extremely relaxing. cons: a bit too relaxing, i was hoping it would develop more. overall grade: A _____Conclusion Welp, that's all for this little review of the tg97 music compo. Hope that this can help you pick out a few good tunes to add to your collection. Take care and enjoy the music... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> :: "Quote List (part 2 / 2)" :: Trixter / Hornet - trixter@hornet.org PC Demoscene Quotes List Maintained by Trixter (trixter@mcs.com) Last modification date: 01 Apr 1997 _____Introduction This is a list of stuff overheard about the demoscene; It's mostly PC-biased, but there's other platforms in here as well. Sources include my friends (live, electronic, and phone conversations), comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos, and IRC. Nothing is made up; these are all actual quotes. They are not guaranteed to be in any chronological order. Send all submissions to trixter@mcs.com. I do not alter the quotes in any way (with the exception of trimming excess material); hence, all spelling/grammar/factual mistakes belong to the quote's owner, not me. This file can be found on the internet at: http://www.mcs.net/~trixter/docs/demoquot.txt Spread this file! Don't let the scene be forgotten! _____General Quotes "You'll have to include a BIT more information than that... I'm sure I could draw a million polys per second if they were all two pixels big, if my routine was hardcoded for their specific co-ordinates, and I was drawing to RAM instead of video memory..." -- Psychoman, on a poly drawing benchmark claim "the csipd 'shot heard round the world' award goes to these two lines" -- Dennis Courtney, on Trixter's assumption that all compos should go back to 486/66's "Demos are half cheats and half optimization. You just don't want anyone to notice." -- Trixter, on whether precalculation is a cheat "'Cause you see, a Lada is like a 386. It may not be fast, it may not look nice, and it may have flaky parts, but it will still run Second Reality... most of the time." -- Psychoman, on the "Lada" (a cheap Canadian car) "[7]Yea, verily and did speak the Amigaphiles [8]"Thou canst not defile the memory of our [9]Beloved machine the [10]One True Computer, for it canst out-compute even a Cray." [11]There was a moments silence and then [12]from the heavens descended the massed thongs and multitudes of console owners. [13]"Woe", they cried, "Surely [14]the playstation is the ultimate beast for it shineth above all other [15]like a star in the night sky which has been exploded." [16]And battle was joined. [17]And thus quitely spake the PC [18]"My Bill be ruler of all" [19]"The war raging yonder distracteth them, and we shall seize control of the Heavens and the Earth and all that computes among them." [20]And it was so." -- Keith Lucas, on the endless flamewar of "My PC is better than your PC" "in JAVA, using even basic OOP features costs some performace, and even non OOP code will be slower then compared C code, because JAVA: - does not allow pointers - if you emulate pointers by using arrays, java will perform an index check for most array accesses. this disqualifies java as a high-performace-language (and qualifies it as high level language). JAVA was designed for applications that DON'T push hardware limits. I think demos should." -- dierk "chaos" ohlerich, on whether or not Java is worth coding demos in (it's not) "Ummm so it has 33 channels? Wow what an improvement over 32. The FM sounds nice though :) about time we got SuperAdlib or something" -- Daniel Kullmann, on the SBAWE "64" _____Compo/Party Experiences "You Canadians have some wicked beer, they got pictures of devils and shit right on the label" -- Daredevil, at Naid'96 "Yeah, where else can you find quality beer like 'Maudite' (Death) and 'Fin de le Monde' (End of the World). :)" -- Psychoman, in response "One of the highlights of my NAID trip was trading a Hornet Underground CD to Necros for a bottle of Molson XXX. Man, that was cool. :)" -- Snowman "Come on...it is easy to find Montreal...the TOUGH part is figuring out SOUTH FROM NORTH in french 1 second before the RAMP approaches." -- Dan Wright, on locating a compo "I was at an Orbital gig on Saturday, and all of a sudden a loop of Timeless started playing on the big screen (it was at a drive-in, wicked!!!). Wasn't even a good part of it too, maybe to conceal it's origin. Concert was wicked, but the cops busted it around 5am. grr" -- applesauce/hfr "Well, let's just say that if the tpolm intro, which missed the introcompo deadline and was entered in the democompo, WON THE DAMN THING, i can only say that you're right." -- nahkamuumi / tpolm, on being asked if the The Summer Party was a huge failure _____Lamers "Read the fucking FAQ! Trixter isn't making the FAQ for the cat's ass!" -- SCout / SuccesS ("where do I find VGA info?") "i can't take it any more next time i see a post on this subject I'm going over to your HOUSE AND I'M GOING TO TEAR YOUR LIVER OUT WITH A BROKEN PENCIL" -- Rimbo, on another "why doesn't demo xxx support my xxx sound card") "If you want to make fun of lamers, please don't post lame code. :-)" -- /eye, on someone trying to "help" a lamer "'is it phong-shaded?' or judging by the topic... er... how big is your phong? :) 'i want to watch mud-wrestling!' 'well i want to watch cyboman II!' 'we'll just do both!' *slams down bottle of Miller Lite* 'it's time for NAKED CO-ED DEMOCODING!!! take your phong *OUT* of my torus!'" -- Pascal Q. Porcupine (on cybersex ads in comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos) _____Possible Names For Compos [Response to "So, now there's at least Scenario, Skenery, Scenest, and Scenery. What'll be the next?"] "Nice, there's still room for Skenario and Skenest.. =)" -- Ville Nummela "Btw. u forgot Scenus.... =)" -- Gregor Eigner "Scenema - for all the assholes in the scene .." -- Addict "Skeven? (A Peter Hajba-only party) Skemen - For all you Dads in the scene Scensational - For tabloid-readers ScentofaWoman - Featuring the demo HooAh by Pacino" -- Rimbo "What about Scenical and Scen-Fest ?-)" -- KYZER "Skene Ruulz 97 naturally." -- Antti Piirainen "Scebbana 97." -- Mikko "Screwery - For ... well, ehr, let your imagination do the job ;-)" -- Sparcus _____The Demoscene: Past, Present, and Future "Yeah... The Horizon parties...Venlo, Diskswapping, phonecalls from people from a far country. Then you had people to look up to... Groups like 1001 Crew, Horizon, Bones, BlackMail, Ash&Dave.... People like Jeroen Tel and JCH.... Calling with a 1200 baud modem to boards... When cracking and demo-making went hand in hand... Real fights at parties! (Tear gas!!), Anti Demo's... The stripteases at the Silicon Ltd. Parties.... The PC scene is TOO professional. Everybody makes hi-tech 3d engines, hoping to sell it to a software company and make big money. Back then demo-making was a big adventure. Even coding and typing the text for a scroller was big fun! You were doing things that 'normal' people could not understand. Remember the feeling when you finished a demo, and spread it by mail? Watching endless scrolltexts, hoping you would be greeted ?" -- SCouT/SuccesS "...hacking AT&T cards and PBX's to make these expensive calls for free...cheating with stamps so you could use them over and over and over again for your swapping. Opening the borders... what a hack... the guy that came up with that has deserved my infinite respect. Same thing with FLD, FLI... doing stuff with that machine that even the C64 engineers never thought were possible. Groups with these incredibly arrogant attitudes: Censor, Legend you gotta hate them... but now they're gone I miss them. Do you remember that demo where you had to rub a wet finger against the joystick port? Geez..., imagine that on a PC. Cutting open disks that were folded double in the mail, stuffing them in your abused diskdrive... and they'd still work... Being disappointed if you got wares that were released more than 3 days ago." -- Deiy/Itsari "Things change; people grow up, mature, get a girlfriend, end studies, get a job, buy a home, marry, have babies, see them grow, send them to university, become grandparents, and sometime they die. Who wants to be doing the same old thing during all those years?" -- Javier Arevalo "The old legends leave the scene and the newcomers can't get better and the scene finally dies. It looks like this for me. We can't get better forever. So, finally it has to end somewhere." -- Nutcase/Kinetic PC/Balance "Today people have abandoned the word Elite because everyone started using it, and it lost it's value. Back then there were the really heavy RESPECTED Elite guys, who had earned their fame and respect, and they got the respect they deserved! Today? "There are no lamers, only beginners". People don't dare to use the word elite anymore. And the newcomers don't care anymore about the heavy guys. Sucks. Yeah, the cracking made the demo scene very underground. It has over the years seperated totally from the modem scene, making it to more like a "art" scene. The underground atmosphere is gone. I remember reading an interview with a guy from Crusaders (I think!) in a mag, where he described how the police ran into the party hall, starting to arrrest people. people quickly opened their Amiga, hiding their disks INSIDE their computers, and jumping down from windows onto cars and so on! :) Almost like a movie, but it was reality - many years ago! The golden years. I couldn't have written it better myself! Commercial is the word. And while we are at it: Big nice "f*ck you" to the assembly organisers for destroying the party. Is earning money really more important than giving the party visitors (WHy the HELL are 13 year old game players let inside the party halls???????) a nice party feeling???" -- Excel/Balance (Amiga) & Dubius (PC) "Now that I think of it, underground parties might as well be still running. But they wouldn't be announced on the internet. :) Maybe it's just that we don't know about them." -- Jare "If you really want to help out the scene you have to go out and do it. You don't neccesarily have to make the newest productions or even be in a group, but you have to go out there and make contact with your fellow addicts and the people in your local scene. If you are able to help educate your local scene and introduce them to the lore and excitement that you remember, they will have go on to share the same attitude as you have and spread it on to others. This slowly spreads and all of a sudden you are surrounded by a thriving scene that once didn't exist. So go out there, introduce your friends, do some mailswapping, and have some gatherings. You wont regret it." -- pyromaniac.beyond "It's no underground anymore. Demos have became MULTIMEDIA!! :)" -- nutcase "This kind of things either grows or dies. Can't stay frozen in time... especially something like demos which is about innovation and creativity. These two words are not exactly similar to stagnation." -- JARE "It reminds me of the sound you could here if you turned the 64's SID chip volume up to 15 and cranked the monitor. You could hear it think." -- Brad Spencer, on how his PC makes "noise" "Hmm... maybe i'm just a bit to concerned... anyway as the scene grows so does the amount of idiots that tend to think they are a part of it... maybe somebody out there thinks that trepanizing win.com is normal?" -- Ravian / Jello "Don't think any other system will ever have same kind of magic with its plain simpleness and grip. Maybe that's the reason why we in Byterapers continue to develop for a machine we used back 10 years ago when we started whole scenething. :-)" -- grendel "Nah. New ideas can ALWAYS be invented, the demo scene hasn't reached any particular limit today that it hadn't reached five years ago. I had a friend once back when we were doing C64-stuff who was really miserable about everybody moving to the Amiga (500). He said 'this will be the end of the demoscene - what's the use of making demos for a machine as fast as the Amiga? The whole deal about demos is to make impossible things happen, but with a CPU as fast as the 68000 everything will be easy' :-) Creativity and innovativity will always prevail in the end. Phong, bump and all the other poly-effects are just a phase just like toruses, glenzvectors, vectorbobs, sinescrollers, rastersplits and bordersprites were before them. Progress never stops. Actually I have dozens of really cool ideas that haven't been coded yet and that would require a pretty fast CPU (A P-150 would do nicely) but I'm too old to do demos now :-) I'll just have to wait for somebody else to do them. People always do, in the end." -- Mats.Knip@hut.fi, http://www.hut.fi/~mknip/ "Creativity.. No, You cannot upgrade your creativity with money, perhaps that's the biggest problem on PC scene nowadays :)" -- Mysdee/Byterapers _____Demoscene Anagrams demo scene: code semen, coed semen demo coder: doom creed future crew: true curfew, cure wet fur second reality: iceland oyster, elasitc rodney, destiny oracle, scary deletion: daisy electron, esoteric dylan, senorita clyde tracked music: acid scum trek, duck matrices, cute mars dick orange: a negro, no rage der piipo: i rip dope hornet archive: rhetoric haven arise beyond: soya inbreed, obey sardine, dire soybean caustic beyond: scab decoy unit, tiny coed scuba, stony acid cube armitage: image art, image rat, great aim pyromaniac: panic mayor, piracy oman freejack: face jerk dr clone: corn led -- Armitage/Beyond "Canine's arse - that was always my favorite." -- Addict "cncd: cndc, ccdn, ncdc, nccd, ndcc, ndcd, cdnc, cdcn, dncc, dcnc, dccn" -- Mikko _____On Microsoft "All I have to say is that I just watched the demo *while* I read this thread." -- Jeremy Williams, on the Windows95 version of Lasse Reinbong "I'm hated of microsoft because they introduce shitty standards ! ..Am I really supposed to use direct3d ?? PLEASE are those the standards ?? Those are not my standards." -- Davide Pasca "I don't have a problem with Microsoft, but I am frightened of them. Their own motto is "A computer in every home, and Microsoft software on every computer." This is a good slogan. The only problem is that Microsoft wants *ONLY* Microsoft software on every computer." -- Trixter "What are they going to come out with next? `Microsoft Bubblesort?'" -- Kaz Kylheku (in comp.lang.c, but just had to include it here ;-) "If there is something I _really_ don't want to see, it's a GUS only Win95 demo :)" - Petteri Kangaslampi (MIDAS Author) "All in all, people are mostly just tricked into Microsoft's ways. Sad to say that if they came out with Microsoft Empty Box they'd have people lining up at the store to buy it, and that they'd also eagerly send in their coupons for Empty Box Version 2.0 when it came out. Microsoft lives in a world of trying to dictate what happens, and trying to get a cut on everything you buy. They represent capitalism gone horribly wrong in the hands of people willing to exploit and those who don't think through enough to realize they are being exploited." -- Anonymous (on purpose) "An entry in the Programmer's booklist: Writing Solid Code: Microsoft's Techniques for Developing Bug-Free C Programs by Stephen Maguire Pub: Microsoft Press ISBN: 1-55615-551-4 It's either very thin or out of print I think ;-)" -- /maverick "excuse me, i have to go wash my computer, for i have exposed it to filth." -- CJD, after suggesting how to write demos for Win95 "...at my job they laugh at you when you say how you code stuff in dos :).. We are converting ManxTT SuperBike from the arcades to pc/saturn etc.. we are getting 640x480 in 40fps (p133) at the moment in windows with quite a complicated rendering scene (plus gamelogic/sound mixing etc).. how come demo coders cant even do that in DOS.." -- FireLight "The fix you suggested kind of works, but you'll get very erroneous results. The reason for this is simply that Win95 timer HW emulation sucks extremely large melons through a very thin steel pipe and returns completely bogus values when the timer counter is read." -- Petteri, on why timer syncronization routines don't work in Win95 "My prediction is than in one year, you'll see as many demos under Windows95 as you see VESA demos now : still a thing for programmers with plenty of experience. The first few ones will get plenty of attention, though." -- Luc-Eric Rousseau, said on July 20th, 1996 "Once in the microsoft's web page there was neat thing saying that netscape is bad because it provides support for 'confusing array of operating systems and hardware platforms'. Cant you see where this leads to?" -- Codex / Paranoids "Why should I limit myself to one single platform, if theres choice to support all of them? Choosing DirectX *only* is what I'm against of. Making your code work with it is fine, but not *only* for it." -- Codex / Paranoids _____On Having Sex "Coders do it with a routine." - Otto Chrons "Coders do it with bugs." -- Trixter "Trackers do it with rhythm." -- Floss "Trackers like to slide up & down." -- Charlatan _____You Know You've Been Democoding Too Long When...
