Terminus General Information >-------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction -- Hello all, and welcome to DemoNews 147. _____Introduction It's been 1 month and 18 days since the last issue of DemoNews. Over the past year, it has become increasingly difficult for me to budget my time. Maintaining the Hornet Archive is a full-time job in itself. It becomes even harder to release DemoNews when other projects come up (such as Music Contest 5). With the introduction of Author Links, Group Links, the automated /incoming/music cataloger, and several other archive-related things, there is increased potential for user error. I've been steadily getting more and more "fixit" emails: "My name is spelled wrong, please fix it." "Why was my song deleted from /incoming?" "Our group URL has changed from X to Y. Please update." "I changed groups from A to B. Update all my song descriptions." Now, I'm all for an accurate archive. I applaud users taking enough of an interest in the archive to keep it clean and tidy. Unfortunately, processing all these emails takes time. Valuable time. Precious time. Time that could be spent on DemoNews, adding cool stuff to the archive, working on MC5, or even replying to back-logged personal email. I've gone from doing a good job on a couple things to a poor job on many things. I don't feel very good about that. It is more with relief than sadness that I will no longer be the sole editor of DemoNews. Over the next few months, GD / Hornet (Brett Neely) will be learning the in's and out's of DN production: how to generate the Top Download stats, update the Calendar, get a listing of newly uploaded files, etc. I will continue to write these introductions until that glorious day comes when Brett puts together an issue of DemoNews from start to finish. I started helping out with DemoNews on 12 Feb 1994 (issue 31), and became main editor on 06 Nov 1994 (issue 69). Let me tell you, two and a half years (70 issues) of newsletter editing can really wear your soul down. Faithful readers of TraxWeekly should count their blessings each and every week to have an editor as dedicated as Gene Wie. Don't let anyone fool you. A newsletter isn't about inspiration or creativity. It's about long hours sitting in front of a text editor surgically operating on unwilling text. Now on with the show... _____Music Contest 5, This And That MC5 is in full swing. If you're not familiar with it, try going to www.hornet.org and clicking on "Music Contest 5", or read GD's advertisement below. We've already processed 77 entries. The division distribution so far has been: 27 rookie, 21 intermediate, and 19 veteran. I hope that this balance remains up through the entry deadline on 15 Jul 1997. The introduction of the intermediate division this year seems to be working out fairly well. Time for some quick math. 27 + 21 + 19 = 67 verified entries. As I mentioned before, we've processed 77. So where did those 10 missing songs go? Well, as a matter of fact, they've been disqualified. I find this distressing. These entries were not disqualified because they were ripped off, or because they were released prematurely to the public. They were disqualified because the entrants simply failed to read and follow the rules. If the rule says "Song must be less than 1,000,000 bytes in size", don't upload a 2 meg song and then whine and complain when it is disqualified. We already have 183 people registered to enter this year. Processing that many entries is time-consuming. Please be a conscious MC5 entrant and be as careful as possible when submitting. We've gotten a lot of good feedback about the contest. Some changes were made almost immediately, like making FT2 the default judging player for .XM files. Some changes we'll make in MC6, like explicitly stating that no sample text, including sample _filenames_, should appear in entries. And some changes we still aren't quite sure about yet, like removing the 4 minute song length rule. In any case, comments are always welcome. _____Hornet MODS Volume 1 We've produced another CD! Hornet MODS Volume 1 contains the last 650 megs of cataloged /music uploaded to the Hornet Archive. This is not a "best of" collection. For that sort of thing, I highly suggest you check out the "MODS Anthology" by Gryzor at http://wwwperso.hol.fr/~gryzor. It took about a month for me to assemble this CDROM. I contacted many people to insure that we had the best available players. Bartman gave us a special version of Midas '95 (for .xm, .s3m, .it files). MikMak coded a native version of Mikit for FreeBSD. Pascal _almost_ got a special version of Cubic Player done. :) XTC-Play put in a special guest appearance, covering the single format under DOS that Cubic Player couldn't handle. What was that format? Get the CD and find out! :D I'm not a very good sales person so I'll just tell you candidly what I think. The DOS and Windows interfaces to the CDROM are called view.exe and w32view.exe respectively. They are not the most graphically pleasing things in the world, but they are very fast and efficient. View shows you a directory structure of the CDROM, complete with descriptions. You hit enter or click on a subdirectory. Then you select a song. The song is quickly unzipped to a temporary directory on your hard drive. View then shows you what was unzipped. Click on the song and the appropriate player is called. One of the advantages in having a different View program for DOS and Windows is that I got to set up different associations for each OS. Under DOS, selecting an .XM will call up Cubic Player. Under Windows, it'll bring up Midas '95. After listening to the song, you can either immediately remove it from your hard drive if you don't like or keep it if you do. The CD is built primarily for DOS, Windows 95, Linux, and FreeBSD. Precompiled binaries of mikmod and mikit are present for both Linux and FreeBSD (covering most of the major song formats). We currently have no Unix version of the View program -- something I hope to remedy in the future. Honestly speaking, I wasn't sure if this was going to be a cool CDROM or not. I mean, a fair amount of new music on the Hornet Archive isn't that good. But things worked out well! Even though I'm sitting on a T1 (180k/s directly to the archive), listening to songs off the CD was much faster than downloading them off the 'net. I popped in the CD, brought up View, and started selecting totally random tunes I would never have spent the time manually downloading. I quickly found 3 new musicians I liked and started once again filling up my personal D:\songs directory. You'll note that this is Volume 1, which implies that a second volume will follow. I hope to make this a regularly updated series. After another 650 megs of /music is cataloged, I'll do another volume. I can even get a little crazy next time and put a few raw audio tracks or .mp3s on it. That might be really groovy, since Music Contest 5 will probably finish up when it comes time to do another CD. The CD will be sold direct for $19.95, probably a bit lower if you get it from a local distributer. There's also going to be a "subscription" plan, where you just get automatically billed and sent a new CDROM when it comes out (for $14.95). Think of Hornet MODS Volume 1 as an alternate way of getting files from the Hornet Archive. To put it more practically, think of it as getting 1 meg / second transfer speeds. :) I just sent off the CD for replication last Wednesday, so we won't actually be shipping them for another 2-3 weeks yet. But ye faithful readers of DemoNews get the advance news. Keep checking out the main www.hornet.org page and I'll put a link up there when the CD becomes available. _____Hornet Archive Improvements A few months back, I jotted down some future enhancements to make to the archive. Hopefully you'll find a couple of these useful. 1. ZipView. (done) 2. Reintroduce ratings to /music. (in progress, see article below) 3. Have file "tagging". User clicks on a few files, they are all zipped together (0 compression), and sent as 1 single .zip file. Nice way to avoid the "Click 'n Save" syndrome. (in progress) 4. Integrate mirror logs in Top Downloads. This is probably not something you'll find very exciting. And the 2 goals I have that "push the envelope" :) 5. HA Mailme. Want to automatically be sent an email the next time a Five Musicians release is uploaded? Essentially, you'll get to specify a list of authors or groups you're interested in and be personally notified when they release something new. (already have the code mostly done for this) 6. HA Autoget. Tired of HA Mailme? Of having to actually go to the Hornet Archive and manually download files? Try HA Autoget! Run this utility periodically, and your system will automatically open a connection to the closest Hornet Archive mirror, download files for you (based on criteria you specify), and unzip them locally on your machine. Imagine waking up each weekend to a local directory full of new demos, tunes, and graphics that you _will_ probably like. (gotta brush up on sockets and protocols a bit before I attempt this) _____Conclusion The human soul can be rejuvenated given enough reconfiguration. I guess we'd better make this a _month_ in review. ;) Well, there's been very little party activity since Easter. I've yet to check out the Abduction '97 demos, but I saw the intros. I liked the Fudge one, nice and non-annoying. The COMA one was decent too, although I can't say any of the Finnish text emotionally moved me ;). A couple complaints. 1st place, Drain by Vista. I have a better name for it - 'Time Zone +13:00 Remix'. Come on guys, you had some originality in 'Lithium', why didn't you follow on it for this intro? Also, 3rd place, Gamma by MFX. More realtime raytracing, but more colorful and better design. Unfortunately, it uses FPU code that brings even a Cyrix P200+ to it's knees. This really aggravated me, running at 2fps on my P150+ and all. It's a shame that MFX and Purge have joined the 'buy a P166' club, and I really hope no other groups follow this trend. OK, so there's my trip to the complaint department. Anything good to say? Surely. If you missed it, Latex by Blank (demos/1996/0-9/255latex.zip) is definitely worth watching. It won Symposium '96, and I believe was uploaded to cdrom.com last year, but mysteriously disappeared soon after, until now. It justifiably beat out Logic Design's 'Fashion', which was also entered there. Although it has a lot of 'black background' and no intro/closing screens whatsoever, the effects are remarkable for early 1996, the music is great, and it even has some nice design schemes. Sorry for the informal structure of this column, but it's summertime, so I don't have to work on my writing skills until my next paper in the fall. :) I hope there will be some nice PC entries at the two Swedish parties going on now (Icing and Remedy) - in the past two years they've only had noticeable entries on the Amiga. -- /graphics ---------------------------------------------------------------> :: GD / Hornet - gd@hornet.org I am issuing a plea for all uploaders of graphics files to be sure that an infofile is included with each image uploaded. This textfile must include title and author information, as well as a contact email address. Stony and I have processed a large number of graphics uploads (mostly from demo parties) that do not have textfiles. Doesn't a file on our archive with the description "??? by ???" look silly? It is a problem for us when party organizers simply zip up their compo directory and upload it. Without title and author information for each image, we can't properly catalog your upload! Demos without a textfile aren't as much a problem. Run the demo, and most often, a title screen will be shown, as well as a group logo screen. A music upload may contain this information in the songtext - however that's no longer an issue as the music archive is now completely automated. But a graphics file without an infofile is a serious problem. Some graphics competitions require unsigned entries; therefore making the job of cataloging the file impossible. Here's the bottom line: if you want your graphics graphics uploads to stay on the archive, you must include an infofile. I expect a policy change on this issue shortly. >------------------------------------------------------------- Top Downloads -- The following statistics include ftp and http transfers from 05 Jun 1997 07:04:07 GMT to 12 Jun 1997 07:02:19 GMT. That's what everyone said... until we stopped doing them. In the wake of a rating-less /music archive, we have a veritable jungle of new tunes with no way to tell in advance which ones are worth listening to. On 08 Apr 1997, the automated cataloging system for /incoming/music went online. Since that date, 734 new ratingless songs have been cataloged on the Hornet Archive. This averages out to about 9.2 songs per day. Tell me, what 65 new tunes did you listen to last week? Or the week before that? You didn't. There's too much. Maybe 130 megs of new /music each month doesn't matter to you, but it matters a great deal to me. There's no point in having a 9 gig archive if 7 gigs of it is crap. To be perfectly honest, it's just not fun to go looking through /music anymore. Quality control is going to be implemented. Songs are going to be deleted. _____How? Aye... this is the tricky part. What you are about to read is the result of 2 months careful planning and preparation. I have spent many long hours mulling over the consequences and potential pitfalls involved with this solution. At bare minimum, I am confident that it will work better than our present situation. Newly uploaded and cataloged files will be publicaly rated. That's right. I'm putting the power of rating music in _your_ hands. When you're looking at a file listing, right next to all of the clickable mirrors and "ZipView", you'll see a "Rating" tag. Once you click on that link, you will be given a chance to rate the song yourself. After a song has had at least 5 public votes with a ** or lower average rating, the file will be removed. After 10 public votes with a **+ or greater average rating, the file is "locked" (no more ratings taken). _____But What About...? You should immediately see several problems with this system. Here are the solutions: 1. "I'm a new musician and I really suck. Any songs I upload are going to get rated right off the archive. That's not fair! Can't I at least have one song on your archive?" Yes. I am proud to introduce the "immutable" song (which I'll refer candidly to as the "IMU"). Every musician is given the option of having a single IMU. An IMU is a song that can not be rated. It exists so that even fledgling newbies have the opportunity to get noticed. Immutable \Im*mu"ta*ble\, a. Not mutable; not capable or susceptible of change; unchangeable; unalterable. 2. "I have at least 5 people on the 'net who don't like me. As soon as I upload a song, they'll all give it a rating of * just to get it removed from the archive." In order to rate songs, you must first register. When you rate a song, your handle will be listed right alongside the rating you gave the song. If nasty trends start appearing, I will find a way to counter them. This is one of those areas which may undergo drastic restructuring before I finally find a system that works well. 3. "I want to rate songs, but I'm scared that the author will get upset with me if I give his/her tune a poor rating." The music scene has been growing out of control. It's time that some people out there get a wakeup call, a slap in the face (so to speak). This music scene madness must end. Have the balls to vote and make a difference. 4. "My song got five ratings all below **. What exactly is going to happen to my tune?" The file will be physically removed from the archive. The database will be updated to reflect this. Since I'm not going to actually remove the database entry, it will still be possible to perform searches that include REMOVEd songs. Removed songs will not appear by default in directory indices or search engine results. 5. "Hey, if my file gets removed, can't I just try to sneak it back into /incoming again and hope for a better rating? Or what happens if someone else in my group accidentally uploads one of my songs that was already REMOVEd?" The reason the database entry is just modified (and not removed) is to provide some sort of check against this exact thing. If your song gets removed and you try to reupload it, the automated /music cataloger will detect that the file had already been REMOVEd and delete it from /incoming. 6. "But I'm really sneaky! I can just rename my song to something different so that it won't be detected, and try to upload it again." At this point, you have gone from using the Hornet Archive to abusing it. I am going to be very upset if people force me to waste my time writing a script to compensate for this. 7. "Can I vote on my own song?" Uhm, no. :) 8. "Isn't it ironic that the same people who criticized you for having ratings in the first place now condemn you now that they're gone? I'll bet that makes you take comments a lot less seriously where matters of /music rating are concerned." What keen powers of observation you have. _____Voter Authentication (The Simple Explanation) So how does the voter authentication work? If you want to vote, you'll register. That part of it is very similar to the voting application I'm currently using for Music Contest 5. Fill out name, handle, preferred email address, and submit. Whenever you click to "Vote" on a song, your machine is automatically validated without you having to type in any nasty username or password. Click on "Rating", click on "***", and you're done. Simple, effective, and secure. _____Voter Authentication (The Complicated Explanation) You can completely skip this section of the article if you want to. When you register to vote, a random 16-24 character long alphanumeric string is generated. This string is your unencrypted "pillbox". I'm using the word "pillbox" because it sounds cute and is easy to remember. Your UPillbox (unencrypted pillbox), is sent as a cookie from the Hornet Archive to your browser, where it is tucked away for safe keeping. Meanwhile... The Hornet Archive temporarily has a local copy of your UPillbox. It crypts it with DES (and a consistent salt value) and stores the output in a text file formatted as USERNAME:CPillbox:ENVIRONMENT-INFO. Some boring information is automatically provided to the Hornet Archive when you use a web browser: what OS you're using, what browser you're using, what your IP address is, etc. It's nothing exciting or particularly exploitable, but it can be used to more uniquely identify you. Snowman:9asf0d89mkj0k:FreeBSD 2.2.1, Netscape 4.0b5, ... Necros:gmIa2xsi7xl9Y:Linux (Slackware) 3.2, Netscape 4.01, ... Farmer:0jm980m0na0sn:Win95/NT, MSIE, I Love You Bill, ... For all you Unix sysadmin homies in da house, you'll notice a vague resemblance between this file and /etc/passwd. This is not a coincidence. :) Once your CPillbox and client information has been gathered, the entry is written to a database and the local copy of your UPillbox destroyed. Repeat. Once your UPillbox cookie has been set, any reference to it is removed on the Hornet Archive. Only the DES-encrypted CPillbox versions are kept. When you attempt to rate a song on the Hornet Archive, your UPillbox cookie is harvested, crypted, and checked against known CPillbox values. From this, two things are determined: 1. you are an authenticated voter, 2. what your handle is. Your UPillbox (and our local CPillbox) will be regularly changed. Think of this as transparently changing your password every time you log on. So how do you crack the system? First off, there is no point in trying to bribe GD or Phoenix for a copy of the database. Since it contains only CPillbox entries (and not the UPillbox keys that are really needed), it'll do you no good. DES is a funky one-way algorithm... I couldn't figure out what your UPillbox was based on your CPillbox even if I wanted to! But to crack the system itself is easy. In fact, it was just done successfully a few months ago in an international study to prove that DES was an unreliable encryption algorithm. All you have to do is network a few thousand Pentium Pro 200's and let them try different key combinations uninterrupted for about 6 months. Blammo! Now you've discovered the secret back door to Hornet Archive music ratings. Any other security holes with this system will be patched as time goes on. Keep in mind that what we're protecting are music ratings, not international money transfers. I expect that DES encryption will be more than adequate. :) Many thanks go to Murray Stokely (murray@cdrom.com), who helped me hammer out some of the more esoteric points in our encryption scheme. _____Conclusion Everything stated above may be tweaked or changed. I've just given the basic outline of the system I'm working to attain. There are several other details that I won't bother going into. You get the point. :) I'm getting old and grumpy. Much of my grumpiness has to do with the excessive amounts of lame email I received. Here are some tips if you wish to write me about this /music change: 1. I will ignore all mails that do not suggest a possible, reasonable solution for every problem pointed out. 2. I respect the opinions of scene veterans much more than newbies. 3. I don't care nearly as much about "being fair to everyone" as I do "being fair to most people". If a change will make 80% of the people happy and 20% sad, I'll probably make it. 4. Email should be constructive. When you write it, keep in mind that the /music jungle is a problem we all face. We must work together to overcome it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> :: "Music Contest 5, The Time Has Come" :: GD / Hornet - gd@hornet.org _____Introduction Been waiting for that chance to compete with your music? Don't want to spend a lot of money to travel to a demo party? Music Contest 5 offers that and more! Music Contest is Hornet's annual Internet-based tracked music competition. Entrants register and upload their songs to the Hornet Archive. Judges register and download their assigned songs. No travel is required! Unlike a demo party's music competition, Music Contest 5 offers separate entry divisions for various skill levels. Additionally, you will be competing with other musicians around the world! _____New in MC5 This year one of the biggest changes to the contest is the addition of the "intermediate" entry division. Three entry divisions allow entrants to enter the level that most accurately reflects their skill. _____MC5 Web Page Snowman's web design and Stony's graphics combine to make the MC5 web page. Everything you should need for the contest is available at the page: http://www.hornet.org/music/contests/mc5 . Forms for judging and entering are on the page, and you're one click away from being registered! You can download the module players to be used for judging. Also available are winning entries from past Music Contests: choose from MP3, ZIP, or tracked format. _____Conclusion Music Contest 5 is the real deal! We hope you'll participate. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> :: "Music Contest 5, A Little Humor" :: Snowman / Hornet - r3cgm@hornet.org _____"Music Contest 5" or "Music Contest V"? This is Music Contest Five history in the making. :-D ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> :: ".zip Waste Products" :: Terminus / Theta + HVC - Jaanus.Kase@theta.fido.ee [originally from comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos] On 15 May 97, Dag-Erling Coidan Smrgrav wrote about "Re: music scene sucks.": DS> "Of course 90% of the modscene is crud! 90% of *everything* is crud!" This is true. And I have a suggestion to all you out there: STOP OVERLOADING HORNET WITH BULLSHIT. NOW! Tt was because of *you* that Hornet stopped rating music. It is because of *you* that most of the archive and manpower is dedicated to music, goddamnit! I wouldn't say it if it weren't true. But I've downloaded stuff from Hornet only to find out that most of it is crap or whatever you call it. As for me personally, I have uploaded only _one_ tune to Hornet. I'm thinking of uploading another, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna do that. I uploaded my song right before they stopped the rating system, so I haven't got my stuff rated. Which is kinda disappointing - at least I would know if there were a point in uploading more or not. Sure, if I had got a * or *+ and other songs were of similar style, there would be no point in uploading them. If I got *** or more, things were, of course different. But I hate it when people upload all their goddamn productions that no one except themselves listens to only to satisfy their own little ego. I know it's an ego trip, to get your stuff mirrored round the world and stuph, but hey, let's approach the thing with REASON. Although I do not deny creativity which may be behind many things, but creativity is not enough IMHO. Take the real world. Making good music is NOT enough. You have to know how to sell it. Ok, the musicians don't do it directly, but that doesn't change the point. The point is that besides content, there is presentation. With presentation, you help people to get to what you're really trying to say. In the Scene, it's not about selling. It's about whether people like your stuff. Like Snowman said in the latest issue of DemoNews: " [..] Hello people? If the only thing your page says is "Great music utilities! Nothing yet, under construction.", don't submit it. " It doesn't go for pages only, it goes for EVERYTHING. Including music and demos. Self criticism is a feature many people lack. I hate to think it might be the fault of a nation (Americans have sometimes been blamed for this) and I still don't think it is about your ethnical or geographical background. It is about what you are and who you do. [ ... ] And, returning to our earthly topic of whether music scene sucks or not, I would say that before uploading ANYTHING, have it listened by at least few friends of yours. And give it time. Do not listen it for a week and then listen to it again. If it doesn't sound as fresh as when you first tracked it, it's not worth it. Another solution is if people kept their stuff which does not pass their initial test of whether to upload it or not, on their personal homepages, which would allow people who are really interested in them get to them remotely. Upload only one song which is characteristic to your style or one of your styles. Provide some method of contact or at least feedback. I'm happy to say that this is the way I found my latest discovery on the scene, and namely MC Dreamer. I was looking for Terminator ][ soundtracks (tracked versions of coz) and I found it from Hornet. And there's the address of the guy's homepage and BOOM - there's better music than I had ever expected. So I am happy, and apparently he is happy to get one more fan. :) So it goes. >------------------------------------------------------- General Information -- _____The Hornet Archive (mirror sites) North America USA (California) (ftp|www).hornet.org/pub/demos (Master site) USA (Pennsylvania) ftp.co.iup.edu/code (/code only) Europe Germany ftp.uni-paderborn.de/pc-demos Italy ftp.unina.it/pub/demo (stale) Poland ftp.icm.edu.pl/pub/demos Portugal ftp.telepac.pt/pub/demos Sweden ftp.luth.se/pub/msdos/demos (stale) _____DemoNews New issues - /incoming/info Old issues - /info/demonews Supplemental files - /info/demonews/other How to subscribe: Mail - listserver@unseen.aztec.co.za Body - subscribe demuan-list FIRST_NAME LAST_NAME _or_ Body - subscribe demuan-list HANDLE DemoNews is sent to your e-mail's "Reply-To" field.
