First Words .......................................................... : Hiya all! Re-reading HugiNews #25, I found it very interesting! A great issue! A diskmag in this style would be really good! A pleasure to read! The news section was as interesting as the editorial. If there were a few articles more, and a graphical engine, HugiNews #25 could have been a diskmag, really. The reactions were also as manifold as if they were on a diskmag. There was a cool discussion in the Hugi mailinglist about the sense of making demos. If you've missed it, subscribe to the Hugi mailinglist (see the subscription information on the end of this issue!) and check out the messages on the web-based archive. This issue contains the infofile of the Hugi Writing Competition. It was an idea of Dario Phong's, and he'll organize it all himself. Dario hopes for your participation! The deadline for articles for Hugi #19 is April 12, 2000. Happy reading, and see you next week. - Adok (Hugi Core & Royal Family) . :........................................................................ .. News ................................................................. : Hugi Size Coding Competition #10 is over! The task was to code the smallest Taquin puzzle game for MS-DOS. The winners are Ruud and INT-E, who, independently from each other, managed to produce valid entries with a size of 273 bytes. You can now download the sourcecodes of the entries of all 24 competitors at the Hugi Size Coding Competition website. Posted by Adok. Link: http://www.hugi.de/compo/ Park: a new group. Rumour has it that Scenial #5 will finally hit the road next week. Scenial is a satirical magazine on the demoscene, also including articles on hacking and anarchy. Announcement ......................................................... : Hugi Writing Competition The Demo scene holds competitions and charts for different expressions of art like intros, demos, mods and gfx. Unfortunately there's one which doesn't have any competition, but still has a chart: writers. Due to this fact choosing the best article writer is based on popularity instead of article quality, like it should be. To avoid this I (Dario Phong^Hugi) proposed Adok to do a writing competition. Such compo can't be held on a demoparty. However, an e-mag and Internet are the right place for such a compo. This info file is divided in two parts: 1. Voting, information for those who want to read the articles and will hopefully vote. 2. Rules, for those who want to compete. Voting The articles will be published in Hugi #19 and online at the home page of the hugi writing compo. The articles will be published when the deadline is over, that is when the deadline for articles for Hugi is also over. From this date, you have two months for voting. Voting files will be downloadable from the home page, and they'll also come with Hugi #19. Take a look at the end of this file for the deadlines. The results of the voting will be published on the home page and in Hugi news when the deadline for voting is over. Please, if you take the time to read the articles, take the time to vote. Rules If you want to compete read carefully the rules below, in case of any doubt, please contact me (mailto:dario_phong@mixmail.com). 1-Entry The article must be plain ascii. The file size must be higher than 2,048 bytes and less than 20,480 bytes. The article can't include any kind of ansi nor ascii art. 2-Topic The article must be about one single topic. For this first competition the topic chosen was "Demoscene". I hope that such an open topic is not going to restrict some article writers from the competition. I chose to restrict the articles to only one topic, because an article with a better topic would be more interesting than other with a boring topic like mp3 for demos. The competition is about writing, not about choosing the best topic. 3-Authoring To further avoid judgment based on popularity, you have to use a pseudonym. You can't use your real name nor your handle. Nor you should use any pseudonym which can identify you. Furthermore, in the article you can't identity yourself by any means. For example, you can't say "I did xx" or "I belong to xx", or "my dear friend xx". This rather paranoic rule is made to avoid voting for popularity. You don't have to vote a name, you have to vote an article. 4-Sending your entry You must send your entry before the end of the deadline (had a look at the bottom of the file) and you must send it to mailto:dario_phong@mixmail.com. Any entry which doesn't fulfill the rules will be disqualified, though the competitor will be notified first so he can fix the error and present the entry again. 5-Modifications and copyrights The articles published online will be published as they were presented, without any modification. The articles published in Hugi will only be formatted. That means that the texts will not be proofread. You retain all the copyrights over your work, but you give us the right to publish the articles online and in Hugi. Both are for non-profit. 6-Prizes Due to the free spirit of this competition, there are no prizes in this competition. Closing words We hope that this writing competition works, we need your support, both for presenting articles, and voting. Of course you can only read the articles, and have some fun while doing so, but if you don't vote, it is less probably that we will do another writing competition.
